Slay & Simplify: Your Ultimate 2023 Beauty Must-Haves

Gone are the days of full face.

Clean girl, no makeup-makeup, and the booming skincare industry are just some of the reasons why less is indeed becoming more.

Though the full-face culture has established itself in the beauty industry, we can’t deny that most non-influencers, hustlers, and boss babes need something fast, easy, and pretty—especially if you’re in the land of the Orient Seas, the Philippines!

With the temperature enough to cook an omelet on someone’s face, no foul-proof makeup can keep the ‘serve’ after all the commuting sagas. And who would want to cake their already clogged pores from the sweat and oil?

As a makeup junkie, it fascinates me how my makeup routine is getting more simplified every year. Is it the age? The weather? Regardless, who wouldn’t want breathable makeup that keeps you radiant?

We can’t move our country from the equator, but we can simplify our makeup routine. Remember, less cake, less crumbs!

After the keep-and-throws, here are the victors that earned their spot in my daily vanity kit and are worth a try.

1. Fairy Skin SPF 50

If you’re in your 20s and don’t smother your face with sunblock daily, let me tell you something—you’re not getting younger. It’s about time for the wrinkles and sunspots to show on your UV-abused face.

Ultraviolet Rays (UV) are one of the number one causes of skin aging and cancer. You’re never too young to start using it. In fact, a study showed that people who use sunblock are 24% less likely to show signs of skin aging.

There’s no escaping the sun, but we can best protect it with SPFs ranging from 30 to 50. With a plethora of sunblocks on the market, choose the one that suits your skin type and environment.

I have combination skin, but I do sweat a lot. I’m also a Morena who’s a victim of white cast, so I had a hard time finding a lightweight, non-sticky sunblock that doesn’t leave me looking like a munchkin.

I discovered Fairy Skin in social media because, let’s be honest, it was everywhere in 2022. I bought it hoping it would do what it claims, and it did! I think it’s the best sunblock I’ve used as of this writing.

Its semi-watery formula melts to your skin without the sticky feeling. It might leave a minimal white cast in the first ten seconds of application, but once it sets, it blends into your skin tone while giving it a healthy glow.

And did I mention it’s hypoallergenic, a home-grown brand, and has SPF 50?

Whether it’s your first time using sunblock or a long victim of a white cast, Fairy Skin will be a great partner this summer. You can get it for only 190 pesos from the link below!

2. Etude Drawing Eyebrow in Dark Grey

I haven’t subjected myself to a crazy brow evolution to ditch my brow routine. After my ‘Sharpie’ and ‘scouse brow’ era, I’ve learned a few things – formula and color are everything.

The common brow shades you’d see in beauty racks in the Philippines are brown, dark brown, taupe, and blonde—as if all Filipinas had their ash balayage.

I have jet-black hair, and finding an eyebrow product that’s not too dark or brown to match it is pretty hard.

Nowadays, I want a softer facial feature with subtly defined brows. Since I have thin eyebrow hairs, it’s best to use a shade that wouldn’t make me too different looking when I don’t wear it.

I searched for a dark grey shade in Shopppe and found Etude’s retractable brow pen. It was one of the first recommendations, and I’m glad I bought it.

The retractable design is hassle-free to use and store. Its angle design easily outlines and fills my brows, and because of its buildable formula, you’ll also be less likely to overfill your brows.

And you know what's the best part? It’s matte and not waxy! It doesn’t give an awkward sheen when you start to sweat.

I have been using it for a month in countless adulting sprees, and it didn’t budge easily. It’s an amazing product for 109 pesos and comes in different shades too.

3. Ever Bilena Color Stick in Doll Face

Ever Bilena has released a line of promising products since 2019, and some of them are their versatile color sticks.

The packaging looks nice, which made me buy it (it was on sale too). Little did I know it would be a staple in my beauty bag. I chose Doll Face which is a reddish terracotta cream blush.

Shades around this specturm compliment my skin as it leaves a bit of a flush without looking like I’ve been bitten by a bahaw-bahaw (house ants, the ones in your kitchen counter--yes). Just think of an island girl getting her natural flush from being a sun-born native *sighs*.

The formula is chef’s kiss for an oily gal like me. It’s a workable cream formula that blends through tapping motions. It’s pretty pigmented, so build the color slowly to your liking. Once set with loose powder, it’s the cutest flush ever.

You can get them for 185 pesos in any Ever Bilena pop-ups, or you can order them here https://invl.io/cliqhb2 <3

4. Dr. Sensitive Blurring Powder in Translucent

I’m honestly a baby powder girl since god knows when. However, I missed powder puffs because it gives that ‘grown girl’ feel while preparing for the 9 to 5. For the record, it’s more convenient to apply too.

I explored the drugstore racks and viola; Watsons got what I needed in their new Dr. Sensitive loose powders. The line promises a blurring effect and sebum control to keep your face fresh and pores healthy.

I’ve been using it for two weeks, and it sits nicely on top of my sunblock and cream blush. I sometimes apply it right after the sunblock and layer my blush to make the color last.

It’s available in three shades. I chose the translucent variant to avoid the brownish transfers on my handkerchief and mask.

Watsons are stacked up with these, so you won’t miss them any time soon. You can also grab them for 169 pesos here https://invl.io/cliqhce <3

5. Focallure Airy Matte Tint

I’ll be honest. I hesitated to include this on the list because it was unregistered by FDA when I first used it. I know! It’s dangerous. I don’t encourage you to do the same.

You might be wondering what compelled me to risk my lips, and the answer is simple— it’s so good.

Tints have a reputation for being lightweight, sheer, and long-lasting. But you seldom get to use lip tints that actually perform well in these criteria.

I got an Airy Matte for half the price of a tint that didn’t survive a glass of water. It’s also the only tint I’ve used that didn’t transfer to my mask amidst the grueling weather.

The product comes in five Morena-friendly colors (my favorite shade is 202). And if that doesn’t seal the deal—let me tell you, it doesn’t patch.

If you’re a tint user, you’re familiar with the awkward and patchy pigment accumulation on your inner lips. However, Airy Matte's watery formula easily spreads on the lips with its doe foot applicator.

It sets into an even and sheer tint that gives your lips a natural-looking color, perfect for casual looks.

If you’re still on the fence because of the FDA issue, I’ve researched it, and they finally have the certification. The product has been examined and is safe to use in the Philippines.

Final Thoughts

Putting makeup is more of a hassle than empowering when you're met with a busy and humid day. But with the right product and proper technique, you can still slay!

Remember to keep it light and fresh.
